Sciatica Treatment in Tamarac, FL

Understanding Sciatica: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment

People who suffer from sciatica often have difficulty understanding where this problem comes from and how to handle its painful effects. If you’re experiencing lower back pain that extends through your buttock and thighs all the way down to your toes, you may be suffering from sciatica. An examination by a chiropractic physician at Care Chiropractic Center can help determine the source of your pain so you’ll know what steps to take for treatment.

Understanding Sciatica

Sciatica, itself, isn’t an age-related condition or disease. It’s the pain caused by problems that are affecting the sciatic nerve in your spine. Located in your lower back, your sciatic nerve runs down your buttocks, hips, and legs all the way to your toes. When this nerve gets compressed, it can cause excruciating pain from your lower back all the way down to your toes.

Sciatica symptoms range from leg and buttocks pain to burning, tingling or numbness in your leg, shooting pain down your thigh and calf, and pain in feet and toes. This pain generally affects only one side of your body. You may experience mild, irritating pain from time to time or debilitating pain that can disrupt your life. Persistent sciatica pain can lead to chronic leg weakness and loss of bladder or bowel function. If you resort to pain killers for treatment, you run the risk of developing a medication addition.

What Causes Sciatica?

Sciatica occurs when nerves in your spine become compressed. Spinal problems like a herniated disc, bone spur or spinal stenosis (narrowing of spinal canal) can put pressure on the sciatic nerve in your spine, causing inflammation and pain. This nerve can also be affected by a fractured pelvis, degenerative disc disease or wear and tear of your lower spine. A physical exam from your West Broward chiropractor or Tamarac chiropractor will determine the source of your pain so you can find relief.

How Chiropractic Can Help

Chiropractic care for alleviating sciatica symptoms may involve any or all of the following:

  • spinal manipulation to realign vertebrae in your spine
  • ice/heat treatments to alleviate pain
  • ultrasound to enhance circulation and reduce muscle spasms, inflammation, and stiffness
  • rehab exercises to stretch and relax muscles that are pressing on your nerves and causing pain
  • spinal decompression therapy
  • electrical muscle stimulation
  • massage therapy

By combining various chiropractic therapies and techniques, we can help restore spinal flexibility and movement and help you find long-lasting back pain relief.

As every case is different, your West Broward chiropractor or Tamarac chiropractor will personalize a treatment plan to meet your specific healthcare needs.
